Of the four sons of Abd Manaf, there is one whose name we know very well: Hashim. He was the great-grandfather of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In fact, the Prophet’s family is called the Banu Hashim because of him.
Hashim was very good at organizing things and taking care of people, so he became the top leader of the Quraysh. Just like his father, he always told the people of the Quraysh tribe to be very kind and giving to the pilgrims who came to the Kabah. He reminded them that these travelers were the guests of Allah. Hashim did a great job as the chief of Makkah, and he helped the people living there in a very big way.
One time, Makkah became very dry and there was not enough food for everyone. This is called a famine. During this hard time, Hashim was so generous that he fed not only the pilgrims but also every single person living in Makkah. Because he was so caring, everyone thought very highly of him and honored him greatly.
Hashim also did something wonderful to help Makkah grow. He organized two big groups of travelers, called trade caravans. One caravan went from Makkah to a place called Syria, and the other went from Makkah to Yemen. Hashim planned these trips very carefully. One trip happened during the warm summer and the other happened during the cold winter.
Under his kind leadership, the people of Makkah became very successful, and the city began to do very well.
